Preview

1.   Sainik Schools, established in various parts of country in the year 1961 with the primary aim to prepare boys academically, physically, and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy. The Sainik Schools opened with the utmost efforts of the then Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri VK Krishna Menon. The other objective of the Sainik Schools are :-

  • To remove regional imbalance in the officer cadre of the defence service.
  • To develop qualities of body, mind and character which will enable the young boys of today to become good and useful citizens of tomorrow.
  • To bring public school education within the reach of the common man.

2.   Initially the Sainik Schools started with the primary aim to prepare only boys for Defence Services. At present induction of women in various parts of Defence Services started.  Due to which it has been decided that introduce the admission of girls in Sainik Schools and National Defence Academy subsequently.  Some Schools where necessary infrastructures are available have been admitted girls candidates in class VI.

3.   Sainik Schools are affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education for class VI to XII with medium of instruction English. Only Science stream is being taught in Sainik Schools for class XII and cadets prepares for admission into NDA.

Orginizational Set-Up

4.   Sainik Schools function under the aegis of Sainik Schools Society which is registered under the Societies Registration Act (XXI of 1860). Schools are governed by a Board of Governors under the Chairmanship of Raksha Rajya Mantri and all the Sainik Schools are joint venture of Ministry of Defence and the Govt of State in which Sainik School situated.  

5.   The Chief Minister or Education Minister of the States in which the Schools are located, are among the member of the Board of Governors.   Each School has Local Board of Administration for overseeing the functioning of the School and its finances. 

Admission

6.   Sainik Schools admit boys and girls in classes VI & IX .  Seats for admission may vary from school to school as per infrastructures available in the school and authorization fixed by Sainik Schools Society.

7.   Detailed schedule and instructions for Entrance Examination are issued by National Testing Agency (NTA) with consultation with the Sainik Schools Society, New Delhi in the month of Sep/Oct every year. School wise admission notification is also published in National/Local news papers. All Sainik Schools conduct admission procedure for their own school only, hence candidates are advised to apply for concerned Sainik School in which he/she desire to take admission. Written examination for All India Sainik School Entrance Examination is being conducted on 1st Sunday of January every year across the country.

Eligibility

8.   The age of candidates should be 10-12 years for Class VI and 13-15 years for class IX as on 1st Apr of the year in which admission is sought. For admission to class 9th the candidates should be studying in Class VIII in a recognized school. 

Pattern of Examination

9.   OMR based entrance examination for admission in Sainik Schools  is being conducted on 1st Sunday of each year.  There is no negative marking exist. The pattern of question papers for the entrance examination is as follows :-

Mode of Selection for Admission

10.   Admission is made strictly in the order of merit on the basis of Entrance Examination held once in a year. The candidates who qualify in the written examination according to prescribed standards are called for medical examination in a ratio of 1:3 keeping in view the number of vacancies available. Finally admission is subject to the candidates found medically fit according to medical standard prescribed for entry to National Defence Academy. However, height and weight are ignored which are variable with age.

Reservation

11.   67% of total seats are reserved for Home State/UTs candidates where Sainik School located and 33% seats earmarked for Other States/UTs candidates.  Subsequently,  15%  seats are reserved for Scheduled Casts,  7.5% seats for Scheduled Tribes, 27% Others Backward Classes and 25% for wards of Defence Personnel (Serving and Retired) including wards of Coast Guards and Assam Rifles personnel  in each category (Home State/UTs and Other States/UTs).

12.   10% of the total vacancies or 10 seats which ever is greater are reserved for Girls Candidates from the Session 2021-22.

Scholarship

13.   The concerned State Government award scholarships to the cadets on the basis of the annual income of their parents. Ministry of Defence awards scholarships to wards of Defence personnel including ex-servicemen.  In addition, Ministry of Defence provides a part of scholarships as Central assistance to those students who are awarded State Govt scholarships.  The sharing of expenditure on fees/scholarships amongst Central Govt, State Govt and the parents will be decided by the Board of Governors from time to time.  In addition concerned  Govt of State provided dietary charges to the home state cadets for 295 days only.  Rate of dietary charge vary from state to state.
